Follow the customer journey to find the handoffs that disconnect marketing, sales and customer success.
More leads can feel like the obvious answer to a growth problem. Before increasing activity, follow a real enquiry through the business. What happens after the first interaction? Who takes responsibility? What information travels with the customer, and what has to be repeated?
This exercise can reveal a different problem: demand exists, but the path from interest to useful conversation is unclear. Or a sale closes, but the expectations set during the sale do not reach the delivery team. Start with the journey before choosing the intervention.
Marketing and sales need a shared definition of the customer, the problem you solve and the signals that make an enquiry worth pursuing. A download, a meeting request and an active buying project are different signals. Treating them as interchangeable makes reporting less useful.
Document the minimum information required for a handoff, the owner of the next action and how a lead can be returned for further development. Keep the process simple enough to use during a busy week.
A stage in a CRM is not a substitute for responsibility. For each transition, name who accepts the work, what acceptance means and how an unresolved item is surfaced. Agree response expectations that the team has the capacity to meet.
The same discipline applies after the sale. Record the promised scope, important stakeholders, desired outcomes and open questions. Customer success or delivery should not need to reconstruct the sales conversation from disconnected messages.
Build a small shared view of the journey. Include movement through the stages, where opportunities stall, why work is lost and what new customers need during onboarding. Check definitions before comparing numbers across teams.
An illustrative example: if enquiries increase but qualified conversations do not, investigate fit, follow-up and the offer before assuming a new channel is the answer. If deals close but customers struggle to get started, review the transition into delivery. These are hypotheses to test, not automatic diagnoses.
Choose one handoff with a clear owner and a visible problem. Map the current process, agree the desired change and review a small set of real examples after implementation. Adjust the workflow with the people who use it.
A connected revenue operation is built through shared decisions, useful information and repeatable habits. Technology supports that work, but it cannot settle an ownership question that the business has left unanswered.
Trace one customer from first enquiry to onboarding. Mark every place where the owner, information or next action becomes unclear.
